The Former Institute of Extra-Mural Studies used to organize the well known Erkowit conferences in which the academic endeavours of the University in varied fields are integrated to those of scholars outside the University. The purpose of these conferences is to seek practical solutions, based on scientific grounds, to the problems facing the country in the various sectors of development. Twelve conferences were organized of which the following are selected examples:
Industry in Sudan (1966)
Towards Self-Sufficiency (1967)
Foreign aid to Sudan (1985)
Social and Economic Development for the Eastern Sudan (1975)
Tourism in Sudan (1996).
The Faculty continues the tradition of organizing Erkowit type of conferences, the last of which was held in 1999 on "Sudan and Neighbouring Countries"
