Historical Background

In 1998 the Faculty of Technological and Developmental Studies became  the  latest faculty to be established by the University of   Khartoum. The new faculty is a continuation and an upgrade of its predecessor, the former Institute of Extra-Mural Studies and Community Development which was founded in 1964.
The role of the Institute was to link the University to the general public through several educational and cultural programs commonly offered within the premises of the University. It also aimed at promoting the abilities and competence of government officials of various levels through in-service training courses. Later, the Institute used to offer intermediate and higher technological diplomas as well as Masters degrees.
A well-known contribution of the former Institute was the organization of the famous Erkowit Conferences that were mainly devoted to discussing national developmental issues.
